Depending on your tolerance for horror films, It often feels more “fun” in its horror than disturbing, but plenty of scenes will stick with you long after the credits have rolled. Whether you have a fear of illness, tight spaces, blood, or any number of creepy and disfigured creatures, It will exploit those fears. Since each member has a differing “worst fear”, the film is able to explore a variety of scary themes without feeling forced.
However, It makes up for the lack of character growth with some unique scares and inventive tricks. Specifically, Mike and Ben get less character building than the other kids, and several other characters feel understated. While most characters get their time in the spotlight, some main characters are glossed over.
To that point, It is quickly paced, and scenes fly by quickly. Besides the scary clown, it’s often the other human characters and their lack of empathy that bring the most terror. Besides the otherworldly and horrifying Pennywise, the gang has to deal with bullies like Henry Bowers (Nicholas Hamilton), abusive parents, and morally questionable adults. Any good Stephen King story is ripe with evil and terrible characters, and It is no exception. Generally speaking, each one of these characters is incredibly likable, written well, and performed with near perfection.Įach cast member stands out in their own regard, including various antagonistic characters. The crew eventually meet up with Ben (Jeremy Ray Taylor), an overweight boy who is new in town.Įventually, Beverly (Sophia Lillis) and Mike (Chosen Jacobs) join the group as well, attempting to help Bill in the search for his brother. Along with friends Richie (Finn Wolfhard), Eddie (Jack Dylan Grazer), and Stanley (Wyatt Oleff), Bill spends his summer off of school trying to search for his missing brother. The assumed leader of the Losers’ Club, Bill Denbrough (Jaeden Lieberher) is haunted by his younger brother’s recent disappearance. Coming from various backgrounds with a common factor of violence and neglect, each member of the Losers’ Club has something that eats away at them.ĭuring the first portion of the film, we are slowly introduced to each main character, with a focus on what truly scares them the most.
